Samir Kouro (S’04–M’08) was born in Valdivia, Chile, in 1978. He received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electronics engineering from the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), Valparaíso, Chile, in 2004 and 2008, respectively. In 2004, he joined the Electronics Engineering Department, UTFSM, as a Research Assistant, and became an Associated Researcher in 2008 and Research Academic in 2011. From 2009 to 2011 he was on a Postdoctoral stay in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada. His research interests include power converters, variable-speed drives, and renewable energy conversion systems.
Dr. Kouro has coauthored one book, two book chapters and over 50 refereed journal and conference papers; he has served as Guest Editor in one Special Section of the IEEE Trans. on Ind. Electronics and was recipient of the Best Paper Award of 2008 of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine.
